Description

As a user, I want all changes to my application data (sessions, messages, models, settings, including message thread relationships) to be automatically saved to the database as I make them via UI actions, so that my data is retained between application uses and is safe from unexpected closures.

Implementation Requirements

This is not a single user story but a fundamental behavior required by several other stories. Implementation involves ensuring the relevant backend service methods use the Exposed DAOs within database transactions to perform the necessary Insert/Update/Delete operations. Persistence must be ensured for:

  • Creation of new sessions (E2.S1)
  • Saving user messages (E1.S2)
  • Saving assistant messages (E1.S4)
  • Updating parent message's childrenMessageIds list when a child is added (E1.S4)
  • Renaming sessions (E2.S5)
  • Deleting sessions (E2.S6)
  • Saving message edits (E3.S3)
  • Deleting messages (E3.S4)
  • Adding/Updating/Deleting LLM models (E4.S1, E4.S3, E4.S4)
  • Adding/Updating/Deleting Model Settings (E4.S5, E4.S6)
  • Saving API key references (E5.S1)
  • Assigning sessions to groups (E6.S1)

Acceptance Criteria

  1. All backend service methods that modify data incorporate appropriate DAO calls within database transactions.
  2. All data changes are immediately persisted to the SQLite database.
  3. Message thread relationships (parent/child references) are correctly maintained in the database.
  4. Database operations are performed asynchronously using Coroutines (E7.S6).
  5. Data integrity is maintained across application restarts.
  6. Error handling is in place to manage transaction failures.

Technical Implementation Details

  • Use Exposed's transaction blocks for all database operations
  • Ensure proper error handling and transaction management
  • Implement rollback mechanisms for failed operations where appropriate
  • Ensure parent/child relationships are atomically updated
  • Use suspend functions for all DAO methods as per E7.S6 requirements
  • E1.S2, E1.S4 (Message persistence)
  • E2.S1, E2.S5, E2.S6 (Session management)
  • E3.S3, E3.S4 (Message modifications)
  • E4.S1, E4.S3, E4.S4, E4.S5, E4.S6 (Model & Settings management)
  • E5.S1 (API key reference storage)
  • E6.S1 (Session grouping)
  • E7.S6 (Asynchronous operations with Coroutines)

Estimate

This is a cross-cutting concern that spans multiple features and requires careful implementation throughout the codebase.
