Description

As a developer, I will ensure proper asynchronous programming patterns are used throughout the application, with appropriate coroutine scopes and dispatchers for UI, I/O, and computation tasks. This cross-cutting requirement applies to all components, including server setup, database operations, and UI interactions.

Acceptance Criteria

This is a cross-cutting requirement that affects multiple stories:

  • UI operations run on Dispatchers.Main (using Compose's rememberCoroutineScope)
  • Database operations run on Dispatchers.IO or a dedicated database dispatcher
  • Network operations (LLM API calls) run on Dispatchers.IO
  • CPU-intensive operations run on Dispatchers.Default
  • Server setup and routing handlers correctly manage asynchronous operations and thread pools
  • Database connection and schema operations are performed asynchronously using Coroutines if they could be blocking
  • Coroutine exception handling is implemented consistently (e.g., supervisorScope where appropriate)
  • Proper cancellation and resource cleanup is implemented for all async operations
  • Component lifecycles are respected when launching coroutines (e.g., viewModelScope, lifecycleScope)

Implementation Details

This is a cross-cutting requirement that applies to all parts of the application. Key considerations:

  1. Use runBlocking only at the application entry points
  2. Respect structured concurrency principles
  3. Configure appropriate thread pools for Ktor server and client
  4. Implement proper cancellation and error handling
  5. Use suspending functions at appropriate abstraction layers
  6. Use Flow for asynchronous data streams where appropriate
  7. Configure timeouts for network operations

Dependencies

  • PR #42 (Initial Multi-Module Project Setup) should be completed first

Parent Epic

Epic 7: Application Core Framework & Windows 11 Integration

  • E7.S3 - Embedded Server Setup (explicitly requires async operations)
  • E7.S4 - Initialize SQLite Database & Exposed Schema (explicitly requires async operations)
